Frequently Asked Questions

Who can obtain a burn permit?

Only residents living in the City of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation can obtain a permit on this site. Permits are conditional and may be revoked at any time.

What can I burn?

Untreated wood pruning's, branches, tree trunks, other vegetation or stumps (that have been allowed to dry for at least two years or to equivalent dryness). All materials to be burned must originate on the parcel of land which the permit is issued.

Do I need a permit?

If you want to have an open-air fire then yes, you need an approved permit. If you are having a campfire a permit is not required provided a campfire ban is not in place.

What Can't I Burn?

The burning of land clearing debris, green unseasoned yard waste and forest material, garbage and construction materials is prohibited.

Do I need a burning permit to have a campfire?

No you do not need a burning permit but restrictions do apply “Campfire restrictions link”

Do Propane or Natural gas appliances require a permit?

No, Propane & natural gas appliances such as barbeques and fire pits can also be used during a burning ban.

I’m moving, can I transfer my burn permit to my new location?

No, permits are not transferable between persons or property.

What if someone complains about my burning activity?

The fire department will respond to all burning complaints received and will be checking for compliance with applicable permit and campfire regulations. Those found to be in non-conformance will be directed to extinguish their fire and may be subject to municipal ticketing or have their permit revoked.

How to I report a burning complaint?

If you have concerns about someone’s burning activity you can report it by calling our non-emergency number 250-469-8577.

How much does a permit cost?

Currently qualifying property owners can obtain a burning permit at no cost.
